Reeds, branches, brambles and dry leaves. But also plastic. It is the material that, after the rains, was dragged by the torrents towards the sea, accumulating in patches in various points of the Messina coast, in particular between Torre Faro and Ganzirri. Several citizens reported the situation, describing it as an “unseemly spectacle” in Torre Faro, but also in other areas of the coast.
The phenomenon is linked to the material present in the riverbeds which, together with rainwater, is dragged towards the coast and ends up in the sea. The currents of the Strait then contribute to dispersing the material along the stretch of coast. The patches, in fact, are not concentrated in a single point, but have been reported in various areas between Faro and Ganzirri.
Plant material prevails, but plastic waste is also found among branches and canes. A problem which, in addition to the visual impact, draws attention to the need to keep the riverbeds clean and to intervene on the collection of materials which, during rainy events, can pollute the sea. The phenomenon is particularly evident after rainfall: what is dragged by the current of the torrents quickly reaches the coast and, once it enters the Strait, is transported by the currents.
