The mayor of Rivolta d’Adda was arrested on charges of aggravated sexual violence on four women, Giovanni Sgroi, 70 years oldoriginally from Mongiuffi Melia in the province of Messina and graduate in medicine at the University of the Sicilian city. The man, with a long and respected hospital career in Lombardy behind him, is now under house arrest.

The measure, signed by the judge for the preliminary investigations of Milan Sara Cipolla, was carried out by the carabinieri of the Milan investigative nucleus on the morning of May 22, but the news emerged only now. The accusations date back to episodes that would take place during medical examinations in the specialist center of Pozzuolo Martesana (Mi), where Sgroi collaborated as a surgeon, despite being officially retired since 2020.

The investigation started in January 2024 after the complaint of a patient who said he was molested during a visit. According to the investigators, the man would have touched the intimate parts of the woman in a way not justified by any clinical necessity. Following telephone wiretapping and house searches, three other alleged victims emerged. The authorities do not exclude that further women can decide to come forward in the next few days.

Sgroi, specialized in digestive system surgery, was director of 2nd surgery and of the Department of Surgical Sciences of ASST Bergamo Ovest, at the Treviglio hospital, and previously held similar positions at the Hospital of Lombardo, always in the province of Bergamo.

In Messina, the news aroused dismay. Giovanni Sgroi is originally from the province of Messina and was formed in the city of the Straitwhere he had embarked on the first steps of his medical career after graduating in medicine. The details of the investigation and the severity of the accusations throw a shadow on the figure of a professional until now estimated, both in his city of origin and in the Lombardy where he operated for decades.

The investigation is underway and the Prosecutor invites any other victims to present himself. Meanwhile, the Municipality of Rivolta d’Adda is in a situation of institutional void pending official decisions by the authorities.
