A demonstration by workers from the Messina shipyards, organized by Fiom CGIL, will be held on Friday starting from 10am in Piazza Unione Europea. The initiative will be preceded tomorrow by meetings of the workers of the main naval engineering companies of Messina: Cantieri navali dello Stretto, Palumbo, Intermarine, and by a meeting of delegates which will be held tomorrow at 6.30 pm in the CGIL headquarters.
The two days of mobilization were called to solicit responses for a sector characterized by low wages, wild procurement, heavy safety deficiencies: all conditions promptly denounced by the Fiom CGIL of Messina and brought to the attention of the institutions. The general secretary of Fiom Sicilia Francesco Foti, the regional coordinator of the shipbuilding sector Serafino Biondo, the general secretary of Fiom Messina, Daniele David and the secretary of CGIL Messina Pietro Patti will participate in the initiatives of the two days.
“Several requests for an urgent meeting were sent to public institutions to convene all the parties, but there was no response,” says the general secretary of the Fiom of Messina, Daniele David. «We consider the silence recorded to be serious – add Foti, Biondo and Patti – and it is important to mobilize to avoid the decline of this sector and to raise attention on working conditions». Fiom has asked to set up a technical table with the Port Authority of the Strait system, the Municipality and the Region.
