The first degree trial against Renato Ciraolo, Carlo Callegari and Gaetano Lucchesi, accused for the events that occurred on 31 October 2021, in Piazza Lo Sardo, ended with an acquittal sentence, pronounced by the single judge of the Court of Messina Catia Bagnato. At the time, the former mayor Cateno De Luca, accompanied by the commander of the municipal police Giovanni Giardina, carried out one of his “blitz” in Piazza “Del Popolo” against the booksellers who set up stalls with second-hand volumes on Sunday mornings. There were moments of tension, culminating in the complaint lodged by the local police against three, in their capacity as booksellers as well as representatives of the Pickwick Club. They were defended by lawyers Diana Gerace, Francesco Giordano and Maurizio Cucinotta.
