There were also 16 children, many of them very young, tAmong the 98 people rescued today off the coast of Calabria by the Crotone Coast Guard while they were on a sailing boat. In addition to the 16 children, all with their families, there were also 30 other minors, most of them from Egypt and Afghanistan.
The patrol boat CP 309 intercepted the sailing vessel with the migrants on board shortly after midday, about forty miles from Isola Capo Rizzuto. The transfer was then carried out onto the Coast Guard vessel which then headed for Crotone where it arrived shortly after 4pm.
Disembarkation operations were carried out at the port during which the Italian Red Cross assisted a pregnant woman, while a child was rescued by Suem health workers. A total of 38 men, 15 women and 46 minors disembarked, 19 of whom were unaccompanied. The migrants, after initial checks by the immigration office of the police headquarters, were taken to the reception center of Isola Capo Rizzuto.
