A practice as reprehensible as it is dangerous: the theft of electricity, in fact, exposes those who resort to it to serious risks, often with potentially lethal consequences. This is what was discovered by the Carabinieri of the Monasterace Marina Station (RC), who, during an in-depth check, supported by the “Cacciatori Calabria” helicopter squadron, ascertained an illicit connection to the electricity grid by a 75-year-old man residing in area.
The individual, in fact, had created a double illegal connection directly on the network, using the energy to power not only his home, but also his farm. An illicit practice which, in addition to involving safety risks, represents significant economic damage.
Upon discovery, the specialized personnel of the electricity supply company were promptly activated, who proceeded to remove the illegal connection and make the system safe. The damage and extent of the energy withdrawal are still being quantified.
The man was immediately referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Locri. The discovery of the abuse is part of a broader control action implemented by the Locride Carabinieri, who since 2023 have intensified operations to combat electricity theft. In the last two years alone, the Roccella Jonica Company has carried out hundreds of checks together with specialized personnel, bringing to light illicit energy withdrawals by 37 people, all reported to the Judicial Authority of Locri.
By 2025, the campaign to combat energy theft continues unabated, with the aim of ensuring safety and protecting citizens against practices that endanger public and private safety.
