The opera Pagliacci, by Ruggiero Leoncavallo, is a drama of jealousy that turns out to be sadly contemporary, given the numerous cases of feminicide that characterize our present. A real feminicide from the 19th century? Probably yes. And then Montalto Uffugo and the festival dedicated to the famous composer and librettist Leoncavallo were the protagonists, in Rome, of an unforgettable evening to celebrate those who fight gender violence.
The mayor, Biagio Faragalli, together with the artistic director of the event now in its 22nd edition, maestro Antonio De Luca, received acclaim and appreciation during the “Allies with You” Award, in the splendid setting of the Casina di Macchia Madama.

“We are proud to have participated in a stellar event dedicated to all those who are actively engaged in the fight against violence and gender discrimination,” remarked Faragalli and De Luca. Representing Calabria and Montalto. For the territory and accompanied by the now consolidated prestige of the festival.
The evening, hosted by the deputy director of Tg2 Elisabetta Migliorelli, saw the participation of numerous guests from the world of entertainment, institutions and culture. Among the winners stand out names such as Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Paola Perego, Maurizio Battista, Marco Petriaggi. Among the illustrious winners also a Calabrian, the university professor and expert in European policies Peppino De Rose, for his social commitment in favor of the young people of Southern Italy with concrete initiatives aimed at counteracting imbalances and social and economic marginalization.
And the opera Pagliacci by Ruggiero Leoncavallo? Not everyone knows, in fact, that this opera, with a libretto by the composer, is inspired by a
crime actually happened in Montalto Uffugo, Calabria, when the composer
was a child, and following which Ruggiero Leoncavallo’s father, who was a magistrate, instructed the trial that led to the murderer’s conviction. In “Pagliacci” the crime committed by the comedian is represented: Canio, who
he kills his wife, the young actress Nedda who cheated on him. This is what was once called an honor killing. Today the theme is unfortunately very current, relaunched and reiterated even more on the occasion of the day of November 25th against feminicide.
The mayor and the artistic director were enthusiastic about the welcome and participation. “An evening with many guests who are close to ‘Allies with You’”. In addition to the individual awards, Montalto was honored with applause and emotions. “Our Festival, traveling for the first time, involved
the entire Montalto area and beyond. A new vision strongly desired by the Artistic Director M° Antonio De Luca, together with the mayor Biagio Faragalli and the Councilor for Culture, Entertainment and Major Events, Silvio Ranieri which made it possible to make our territory, our wonders and the great moments known cultural proposals”, the gloss.
