The mantra is that this is not a “self-nomination”but it is a political step that undoubtedly has its weight: Gianni Speranza, ten years after the end of his second term as mayor, says he is “available” to “be democratically evaluated by the centre-left forces”. The time for tactics now seems to be over, also because the (so far hypothetical) coalition to which the progressive forces opposing the Mascaro administration refer no longer has time. Thus the former mayor, 70 years old and with ten years of experience (2005-2015) as administrator of a city that is certainly not easy to manage, breaks the hesitation starting from the support already shown by movements that are not markedly left-wing (such as the centrists of “Popular base”) and looking, inevitably, to the announcement of the Democratic Party which, after months of internal turmoil, says it is ready to start the debate in view of the municipal elections next spring. But he points out: “If there is a proposal that unites and has greater consensus than mine, I accept it democratically.”
Speranza is available to «take charge of an effort of good governance – he says in an interview with the Gazzetta del Sud – which is measured first and foremost with daily problems, from roads to cleanliness, from hydrogeological safety to the question of water, without promising miracles». The objective is «to help the community regain self-confidence through a non-autocratic administration like the current one, but truly democratic, which does not “excommunicate” those who dissent and has a broad vision that returns Lamezia to the center at a regional and national level» .
