The president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, has appointed the former prefect Piero Mattei as the new extraordinary commissioner of the Municipality of Messina.
«On the eve of a very delicate phase such as that of the administrative elections – highlights the governor – we have chosen to entrust the leadership of the Municipality to a former prefect with solid administrative experience, capable of accompanying the city of Messina with authority and balance to the polls for the election of the new mayor and the Municipal Council».
Career
Mattei, 82 years old, graduated in Law from the University of Palermo, and entered the civil administration of the Interior in 1969. He was prefect of Oristano, Crotone and Vicenza and deputy prefect in Palermo and Salerno. He also served in the prefectures of Enna, Agrigento and Potenza, as well as having held other prestigious positions in numerous public bodies. In 2023 he was extraordinary commissioner of the Municipality and Metropolitan City of Catania and, previously, deputy extraordinary commissioner of the Municipality of Palermo and director of the regional office of the High Commissioner for the fight against the mafia in Reggio Calabria.
