It arrived late in the evening sentence at the maxi Nebrodi appeal trial on the pasture mafia, or rather the Tortorician clans of the Batanesi and the Bontempo Scavowho for decades have organized agricultural fraud against the European Union and Agea, draining millions of euros of public funds. The second-degree criminal section presided over by judge Francesco Tripodi and also composed of colleagues Antonino Giacobello and Daria Orlando around 9:30 had retired to the council chamber. The numbers speak of 65 convictions, with only one complete confirmation of the first degree for Gino Calcò Labruzzo, and 64 reductions of sentence, 18 total acquittals and 6 total prescriptions. For 6 other defendants the appeal of the prosecutor was rejected, therefore the acquittals of the first degree were confirmed. The appeal judges said no, as had happened in the first degree, to the “mafia” nature of the Faranda group considered by the DDA to be close to the Bontempo Scavos, which instead was one of the key points of the prosecutor’s appeal, thus confirming the existence of the “simple” association.
The highest sentence was given to Sebastiano Bontempo (born in 1972), with 20 years and 6 months, while Salvatore Aurelio Faranda went from 30 years in the first degree to 20 years in the appeal sentence..
In April, on the final day of the prosecution, the deputy attorney general Giuseppe Lombardo and, in application, the deputies of the District Anti-Mafia Fabrizio Monaco and Antonio Carchietti, had concluded their indictment divided into several parts. And they had urged the appeal judges to substantially confirm the first-instance sentence, with the addition of the recognition of the mafia association that concerns the Faranda group, considered by the DDA to be close to the Bontempo Scavo, a group that instead in the first instance was evaluated as a “simple” criminal association. And then they had requested some acquittals. Between July and August, the speeches of the almost one hundred lawyers involved in the defense were then recorded.
