The frosts recorded during the New Year period hit the productive heart of Sibaritide hard, causing extensive damage to the agricultural sector of Cassano all’Ionio. An adverse climatic event that has put numerous local companies in difficulty.

Vegetable and citrus groves affected

Among the most damaged crops are the horticultural ones, but above all the precious citrus groves that extend from Cassano towards Sibari, where there is a real massacre of products, with heavy economic consequences for the producers.

Inspection with the Region

Yesterday, Mayor Gianpaolo Iacobini and Deputy Mayor Giuseppe La Regina met with some representatives of the affected companies and accompanied officials of the Calabria Region on a technical inspection of the affected areas. The field verification was preparatory to the activation of the relief measures necessary to deal with the emergency.

During the meeting, the municipal administration thanked the Region for the timely intervention and, in particular, the Agriculture Councilor Gianluca Gallo for the attention paid to the matter from the first hours.

Towards the calamity request

The Municipality has already started the administrative process to support farmers: in the next few days the Municipal Council will bring the request for a natural disaster declaration to the agenda, with the aim of guaranteeing producers support in the face of the serious losses suffered.

«We will be alongside our farmers at every stage of this journey – declared Iacobini and La Regina -. Agriculture, together with tourism, represents one of the pillars of the local economy and we will do everything possible to ensure that the area receives the necessary support to restart”.
