The waters of the Strait of Messina as a metaphor of purification on “glass beach”story of forgiveness and rebirth of the American director Will Geigerin the room from June 30 with Nfilm after the world preview yesterday at the Ischia Film Festival. The film will be in the cinemas of Messina, Catania and Palermo from 1 July and to Reggio Calabria from 3.
In competition in Ischia in the section of the “Location denied” festival section, dedicated to works that tell territories at risk, it is the first feature film entirely shot between the two sides of the Strait, with the main locations the Messina Maritime Borghi of Ganzirri and Torre Faro (plus some filming in the city) together with Villa San Giovanni, Serra San Bruno, Scilla and Bagnara Calabra. The story is that of Salvo (the Catania actor Claudio Castrogiovanni), a fisherman marked by a tragedy, who, after having fled the Calabrian mountains, returns to the maritime village where he grew up when he learns about his father’s illness (Letterio Spanò). But he finds the family home occupied by Binta (Daniela Scattolin), a young man of African origins, who lives with his son Moussa (the debutant Reggio Soutyman Diakite). It is the beginning of a forced and silent coexistence, full of diffidence and meandering tensions, which however will evolve in possible rebirth when except and Moussa will take care of the repair of the paternal boat.
“Salvo has great difficulties in expressing his emotions – says Castrogiovanni – he has so much anger inside and pains not expressed since childhood. It is a powerful story that represented a touching and tiring journey, even physically, for the scenes in apnea without stunting and those of fishing on the Feluca Victor. But I had the help of the captain of the boat Nino Mancuso (in the Easter film) and the knowledge of Will ».
To inspire the director Geiger a significant episode: «When I arrived for the first time in Ganzirri, where I lived three years, I saw fragments of glass on the beach, rounded up by the water. It seemed to me an excellent metaphor to say that internal pain over time is attenuated. In the film unless he will understand that he has to forgive himself and go on ».
The peculiarity of feluche and the knowledge of fishing in the strait, profession at risk of extinction. «I don’t know what will be of fishing with the feluca if the bridge will be built – he adds – but it is a fascinating and often complex profession, strong of a centuries -old story. It seemed perfect to turn this story in places never beaten as a set of feature films ».
In the film also the actors Cosentini Rita De Donato and Peppino Mazzotta, who play Chiara, ex -wife of Salvo, and Mario, policeman and new companion of the woman. “A man who tries to protect his partner and Lucia (Chloe La Rosa), Chiara and Salvo’s daughter – says Mazzotta -. Throughout history it will make a serious mistake, but by excess of zeal ».
Among the professionalism involved, Francesca Sofia Allegra, mountains with the Catania Pietro Vaglica; The actor Saverio Tavano, production delegate for Calabria, and the interpreters Gianfranco Quero, Maria Grazia Soraci and Cinzia Muscolino, who also edited the costumes. In the cast also the Palermo actor Corrado Fortuna.
