Mayor Franz Caruso chaired, at Palazzo dei Bruzi, an operational meeting dedicated to urban decorum and the cleanliness of the city. The meeting was attended by councilors Valentina Varchera and Gianluca Orrico, the manager of the Environment sector Giovanni Ramundo, the DECs (Executive Director of the Contract) of Ecologia Oggi and the cooperatives in charge of the services, respectively Carmen Trotta and Antonio Moretti and the DOCs (Operational Director of the Contract) Francesco Altomare of the urban hygiene service and Antonio Lupinacci of the urban decoration service.

The Mayor’s opinion: “Visible results, but not enough”

During the meeting, the mayor firmly expressed the need for further improvement in the cleanliness of the city, underlining how the standards achieved are not yet fully in line with the objectives of the municipal administration.

“I have carried out several inspections – said Franz Caruso – and the situation does not satisfy me completely. Certainly the city today is cleaner than what we found and there are concrete and appreciable results in various areas, especially in the historic center and in some areas of the city where cleaning and maintenance interventions have restored greater decorum and liveability. However, it is still not the city I want”.

The critical issues: weeds and resource management

Particular attention was paid to the presence of weeds in some urban areas and the need to fully guarantee the decorum of the city. The First Citizen therefore expressly asked for a decisive change of pace in the management of the still existing critical issues.

“With the resources made available and the workforce employed – reiterated Franz Caruso – I expect much more. Critical situations must be definitively eliminated. What the citizens are asking for is a substantial change of pace and what I demand”.

Possible investments and new challenges for cooperatives

However, the Mayor wanted to recognize the commitment made by the operators and cooperatives involved in the area on a daily basis, highlighting that the improvements recorded represent an important basis from which to start again. Precisely with this in mind, the municipal administration is evaluating the possibility of providing for an economic increase in favor of the cooperatives in charge of the services. An investment which, however, will have to translate into a further leap in quality in terms of efficiency, presence in the area and concrete results perceivable by citizens.

Councilors Varchera and Orrico also highlighted some problems that require immediate interventions, including the presence of abandoned cars in various areas of the city.

Rigorous controls and waste management in condominiums

During the meeting, a new phase was also defined characterized by more rigorous controls, with the involvement of the Municipal Police, especially with regards to the correct disposal of waste in condominiums. In fact, it has been noted that many residential complexes still do not adequately use the tubs intended for separate waste collection.

“We must offer the city the image it deserves – concluded Mayor Franz Caruso –. It is necessary to do everything necessary to make this happen. Decorum and cleanliness represent the first business card of our community”.
