Outbreaks of tension over wind energy in Calabria

At the height of a rather eventful year on the renewable energy front, in the final months of 2024 the level of conflict regarding the feared construction of new plants in the region has further risen. 2025, therefore, promises to be equally animated by disputes, in particular on wind power, which constantly travel on a double track: the political one, which now involves many institutional representatives, mostly mayors, in support of the growing manifestations of intolerance on the part of the territories towards the proliferation of private investments in the exploitation of natural resources; the bureaucratic and legal one, on which the provisions of the bodies involved in the authorization processes travel and, consequently, the increasingly frequent appeals and counter-appeals that bounce between the administrative justice bodies.

The latest available update of the “Econnextion” map created by Terna shows, as of 30 November 2024, 197 ongoing practices in Calabria for the construction of energy production plants from renewable sources. Of these, 67 concern solar energy plants (2.58 gigawatts), 8 are for off-shore wind (4.37 gw) and 122 are for on-shore wind (6.60 gw). The provinces of the region most affected are those of Catanzaro (67 cases) and Crotone (59), followed by that of Cosenza (49). Respectively 12 and 10 practices are registered for the Reggino and Vibonese areas.
