Over half of Calabrians are in debt: when life is marked by instalments

The financial difficulties of families are a blade stuck in the belly of a Calabria suspended on the edge of the social crisis. It is no longer just the chronicle of ancient poverty, but the story of a daily exhaustion that passes through cities and towns, empties domestic budgets, fuels anxiety and drags thousands of people into the perimeter of over-indebtedness.
In 2025, according to Eurisc, the credit information system managed by Mister Credit-Crif, 57.8% of Calabrians have at least one active loan including mortgages, personal loans and consumer credit. A year ago they were 55.3%. The average regional debt stands at 19,208 euros, with a monthly installment that has risen to 237 euros. Apparently small numbers, but devastating in a land where incomes remain among the lowest in Italy and where inflation continues to devour the purchasing power of families.
