PETRONÀ – He was caught while burning plant residues on agricultural land he owned, without authorization and without taking the necessary safety measures. For this reason, a 70-year-old pensioner was sanctioned by the Carabinieri of the Sellia Marina Company with a fine of 500 euros.
The episode occurred in the late morning of Friday 29 May along Provincial Road 5, during a patrol and control of the territory. The military noticed a brush fire in an agricultural land adjacent to the road and intervened to verify the situation.
The risk of flame spread
According to what was ascertained by the police, the fire had been lit without authorization and without particular precautions, in an area characterized by the presence of dense vegetation and a short distance from the road. A situation which, thanks to the wind and high temperatures, could have favored rapid spread of the flames towards the neighboring land and the surrounding wooded areas.
The military identified the people present on site, including the owner of the land, a seventy-year-old local man, who was near the area on board his off-road vehicle.
Fire brigade intervention
The Carabinieri requested the intervention of a team of firefighters from the Sellia Marina detachment, who took steps to extinguish the last outbreaks and made the area safe through clean-up operations. The owner of the land was therefore charged with an administrative fine of 500 euros.
The intervention is part of the broader prevention activity launched in the provincial territory in view of the summer season, as part of the campaign promoted by the Prefecture of Catanzaro and the Calabria Region against the phenomenon of fires. The checks will continue throughout the province with the aim of preventing behavior that could put the environmental heritage and public safety at risk.
