On the day dedicated to national unity and the Armed Forces, too Pizzo wanted to pay homage with a ceremony that saw the active participation of the school. However, the event was not free from controversy, linked to the “placement” of the laurel wreath at the war memorial, long before the ceremony. It had been allocated there in the morning, and some complaints were received from some parents of students from the nearby school: “These demonstrations – they explain – serve to instill the values of Unity in the children and to awaken their consciences. What does it mean to place it directly there, for then take it back and take it to the church, and finally place it in the pantomime in procession…”.

For his part, the mayor Sergio Pititto clarifies the situation, explaining that the florist placed it on the site for logistical needs, since the Cathedral was still closed. “The event – he observes – has great significance and it is important that citizens, and especially children, participate. We have read the message from the Head of State and I also wanted to leave a warning, so that our children understand the importance of this significant day…”.

In the past, other administrations had chosen to have the crown blessed directly at the monument: in short, each administration has always evaluated the most congenial way to celebrate this anniversary. However, what happened makes it clear that the event is not anachronistic, but deeply felt and the celebration offered an opportunity to reflect, demonstrating how every “detail” can become an object of comparison. “Above all, it is important to experience this moment of sharing and collective growth – Pititto comments – avoiding controversies obscuring the profound meaning of these celebrations”.
