Stories, memories and justice at the center of the first day of plot, the Festival of books on the mafias which until Sunday will fill the squares of Lamezia With meetings, debates, projections, shows. Inauguration in the afternoon, in the presence of the large family of the Festival, the artistic director Giovanni Tizian and the institutions. “Since 2011, the first steps of the Festival moved – Nuccio Iovene, president of the Trame Foundation, immediately told – and then perhaps nobody thought it would continue for so long”.
The thanks, immediately, to the authorities who in Lamezia have always supported the Festival and, for the occasion, also to the new newly elected mayor, Mario Murone, who has kept praising above all the great team of young volunteers who animate plots every year. Above all, the journalist Giovanni Tizian speaks of the principle of “contaminating a community”, for the fifth time artistic director of plots and who admits the historical and worrying phase “for what happens in the world. We propose themes that have a certain weight in the public debate, let’s not forget that many journalists are still intimidated or worse they die to do their job. Making information – adds Tizian – means making citizens freer, more aware, aware of their rights and gives them the opportunity to get rid of blackmail. “Free free” – the reference to the theme chosen this year – means this: free to choose your path without anyone choosing it for you “.
Focus of the first day of plot, the debate on reception and save in the sea, also on the occasion of the World Refugee Day, which the Festival thought of honoring with a large debate with Maso Notarianni (Tom project all eyes on the Mediterranean), Don Giacomo Panizza (South Project), Francesco Cancellato (director of Fanpage), Andrea Fabozzi (director of Il Manifesto) and Maria Scaramuzzino (Gazzetta Del South). Touching theatrical moment with “Voices of Far”, edited by Achille Ira and a space also for the virtual visit to the Sengegency ship “Life Support”.

Excited and exciting, the many young migrants who have given a sharp theatrical performance from the stage, pulsating life and energy.
“Working there was interesting – Achille Ira, actor and curator of the performance, told us – because everyone starts from different experiences and backgrounds. We have tried to highlight every way of being, every ability, every attitude, every momentum, starting from the differences and seeking a synthesis. Everyone has felt part of something ».
The theme then continued with the presentation of the “Shadows on the Sea” investigation documentary by Antonia Ferri and Arianna Eagle Ventre, Morrone Prize for Investigative Journalism, in collaboration with Fanpage, and after a debate with Francesco Cavalli of the same prize, the directors and Massimo Razzi of Il Quotidiano del Sud.
Also at the cloister of San Domenico, the meeting with Mariangela Paone, reporter specialized in international information, regarding her book “Suspended”, written with Rezwana Sekandari and published Add publisher, was also held. I also meet with Giovanni Bianconi and his book “One like us” (published Treccani) with the journalist Nicola Mirenzi. Finally, the exhibitions inaugurated.
To close the evening, the awaited document “Cutro, Calabria, Italy”, a powerful cross -section on tragedy, responsibility and memory of the Calabrian director and screenwriter Mimmo Calopresti who, with passion, in dialogue with the journalist Andrea Fabozzi, of the Manifesto, focused widely on his work. «The reportage tells the community, tells of these Calabrians who suddenly see these corpses and make themselves available to help with the survivors, with the relatives who arrive. The soul of the Calabrians accustomed to emigration comes out. A Calabria suffers that suffers because the boys go away. The Calabrians are not so happy to see these people from the outside, but they understand that they are people who are not well in their countries, that there is something that does not work, perhaps the Calabrians have also understood that if they could keep them here, give them houses, work, as Mimmo Lucano did at the time, it may be that this immigration for Calabria will become a great resource “.
A narrative that perhaps goes against the dominant one, confirms Calopresti, but “that when it goes on the practice also comes out of politics, becomes something else. Cutro becomes the center of something important that has happened, also for politics. There is something that, if seen in its reality, could definitively change today’s narration ».
