Also contributing to the debate were Pietro Manna, general director of Arpal Calabria, who underlined the importance of conveying to young people greater awareness in choosing their future, and Enrico Limardo, director of the National Foundation for Labor Consultants, who invited young people to seize the stimuli offered by the territorial network led by the Region for effective orientation to training and entry into the world of work.

The second panel, conducted by the journalist Massimiliano Raffaele, had as its common thread the skills most in demand in the current job market and emerging opportunities. The speeches by Aldo Ferrara (president of Unindustria Calabria), Pietro Falbo (president of the Chambers of Commerce of Catanzaro, Crotone and Vibo Valentia), Giuseppe Greco (general director of INPS Calabria), Massimo Temussi (general manager of Active Policies of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies) and Fortunato Varone himself focused on the skills to be strengthened: soft skills, digital skills, flexibility, ability to adapt to change, continuous updating (lifelong learning), STEM skills and conscious use of artificial intelligence.

In his speech, Fortunato Varone presented the results obtained by the Calabria Region through the Guarantee of Employability of Workers (Gol) program, the instrument that has had the greatest impact on reducing the mismatch between job supply and demand, with over 40 thousand people trained. The Mirai project was also mentioned – Together we create the future, already active in Calabrian secondary schools and close to its new edition.

The new spin-off, “Mirai on the road”, was born precisely from Mirai, officially presented, which will involve the signing of a memorandum of understanding in the month of January between the Calabria Region, the Regional School Office, the Prefecture of Catanzaro, the Traffic Police, Unindustria and the Chamber of Commerce of Catanzaro, Crotone and Vibo, which envisages starting road risk prevention activities in schools and training on safety in the workplace within companies, as underlined by the prefect of Catanzaro, Castrese De Rosa; the regional director of Inail Calabria, Teresa Citraro; the president of Unindustria Calabria, Aldo Ferrara.

The morning ended with an interactive moment which involved the Employment Centers of Catanzaro, Lamezia Terme and Soverato, the Its Academy Cadmo, Elaia, Pinta and Tirreno, the Employment Department of the Calabria Region, Arpal and Inail, allowing the students to dialogue directly with the protagonists of the territorial network of employment policies.

The afternoon session, led by journalist Alessandro Tarantino, saw discussions between public bodies, businesses, chambers of commerce, unions and labor operators. Representatives of the Calabria Region, Arpal, the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies, INPS, Inail, Sviluppo Lavoro Italia, Fondazione Lavoro Consulenti del Lavoro, CCIAA and the trade union organizations CGIL (Luigi Veraldi), CISL (Giuseppe Lavia, general secretary), and UIL (Maria Elena Senese, general secretary) took part in the technical table. The discussion allowed us to take stock of the implementation of the reforms, share common strategies and outline the priorities for the future of the Calabrian labor market.

The initiative “Pnrr: Thinking the New. Starting again on the Net” confirmed how the future of work in Calabria depends on the ability to create a system, network skills, services and opportunities and invest decisively in the new generations. The comparison between institutions, businesses, the world of training and the social partners has returned the image of a Calabria that looks forward, aware of the challenges but determined to seize the opportunities offered by the Pnrr to build a more inclusive, qualified job market capable of retaining talent in the area.
