Earthquake in the municipality of Giardini Naxos. Mayor Giorgio Stracuzzi was declared out of office by the First Civil Section of the Court of Messina, presided over by Judge Corrado Bonanzinga.

The provision establishes that the mayor, elected in 2020, cannot hold the office of mayor due to incompatibility with the contextual disqualification. An affair linked to a design assignment entrusted in July 2021 to the mayor’s brother, winner of a tender announced by the Technical Office, which caused Giorgio Stracuzzi to end up in a situation of incompatibility pursuant to art. 61 of the Consolidated Law on Local Authorities, which prohibits those who have ancestors or descendants or relatives or in-laws up to the second degree of assignees of municipal jobs or services from holding the position of mayor.

The dismissal from the office of mayor was promoted before the civil court with a popular action, supported by the minority councilors Agatino Bosco and Francesco Palumbo. The early termination of the mayor entails the termination of office of the respective council and the respective municipal council and the appointment of an extraordinary commissioner, with the start of procedures aimed at calling new elections.
