“Italy and Calabria cannot in any way tolerate the possibility that war material or material of dubious use, the so-called ‘dual use’, may transit through our ports towards war scenarios as we fear they are attempting to do with the passage of ships in the direction of Israel and the Gaza Strip using the ports not only of Gioia Tauro but also of Crotone”.

This was stated by the deputy of the 5 Star Movement Anna Laura Orrico.

“Both as M5s – says Orrico – and personally we are keeping a high level of attention on the matter. Regarding the port of Gioia Tauro, after the reports of the ‘No Harbor for genocide’ campaign and of Usb, first I and then my colleague MP Ascari went to verify the news on the seizure, by the authorities in charge, of some containers carrying perhaps ballistic steel. Now, however, it is highlighted to us, again by Usb, that at the port of Crotone there would be systematic presence of some motor ships which, according to what has been documented by independent observers such as ‘Weapon Watch’, are frequently used in international military logistics for the transport of armaments and explosives.

A very worrying circumstance – continues the five-star representative. Both because our regulatory system absolutely and mandatorily prohibits the transit and export of weapons from our country with law 185/1990 and establishes the repudiation of war by promoting peace with article 11 of the Constitution. Both because the port of Crotone, already the scene of very serious accidents at work, does not appear structurally and procedurally adequate to act as a logistical hub for materials with a high potential for war risk.

This is why – concludes Anna Laura Orrico – I have decided to present a parliamentary question to the Ministry of the Interior and to that of Infrastructure and Transport to verify the legitimacy of the presence of some ships at the port of Crotone, in particular the ‘Capucine’ and the ‘Severine’, and whether these do not transport military vehicles or materials”.
