“The Calabria Region takes a decisive step towards the environmental restoration of the territory with the issuing of decree 17600 of 25 November 2025, which officially launches the remediation and restoration interventions of the former landfills envisaged under the Agreement for development and cohesion (FSC) 2021–2027, thematic area 05 “Environment and Natural Resources” – Line of Intervention 05.04 “Reclamations”.
This is what the Councilor for the Environment of the Calabria region, Antonio Montuoro, communicates, who speaks of a “strategic intervention that allows us to structurally address critical environmental issues present in the area, returning degraded areas to the communities, investing in environmental quality and urban and territorial regeneration”.
The decree approves the financial framework and authorizes the multi-year commitment of 49,711,102.95 euros, intended for the implementation of 21 reclamation interventions in as many Calabrian municipalities. The works involve the safety, recovery and redevelopment of former landfills or highly compromised areas, contributing to environmental protection and territorial regeneration. The financing is entirely covered by the Fund for Development and Cohesion (FSC), spread over the years 2025-2031, thus guaranteeing planning continuity and complete economic coverage.
The interventions fall within the municipalities of Reggio Calabria, Crotone, Corigliano-Rossano, Verzino, Castrovillari, Marcellinara, Montalto Uffugo, Scigliano, Rende, Scalea, Lungro, San Floro, Pietrapaola, Campana, Caloveto, Falconara Albanese, Gizzeria.
“With this decree – Councilor Montuoro also highlights – we are taking a fundamental step for Calabria. The reclamation of former landfills is not only a regulatory obligation, but an act of responsibility towards citizens and future generations. We are talking about an investment of almost 50 million euros, entirely financed by the FSC, which allows us to intervene in a widespread manner on territories marked by years of abandonment and environmental criticalities.
We will return clean, safe and finally reusable areas to communities. Ours is a clear strategy: tackling environmental emergencies with multi-year planning, administrative seriousness and a vision that integrates soil protection, remediation of polluted sites and landscape enhancement. This result – concludes the representative of the Occhiuto Council – represents only the beginning of a path that will continue with determination”.
The provision also takes into account the advances previously granted to the Municipalities on FSC 2007/2013 and FSC 2014/2020 funds. These are amounts equal to 3,190,076.59 euros, which will be compensated in the period 2025-2031, avoiding duplication of financing and ensuring administrative linearity.
It implements what is established in the Agreement signed on 16 February 2024 between the national government and the Calabria Region, implemented in subsequent resolutions of the Regional Council and financed by Cipess resolution no. 17 of 23 April 2024.
