Around a thousand students and workers gathered this morning in Piazza De Nava in Reggio Calabria for the start of the procession organized by USB on the occasion of the general strike.

“We are quite discouraged,” says a girl. «We are here – he adds – because we also want to give solidarity to the other kids who, like us, in all the cities of Italy, throughout Europe, fight for what they believe in. The answers we would like is that there could really be a change. They always tell us that we are the future, but we are here in the square to show that first we are the present.”

Marra (Usb): “A clear signal of social anger”

Peppe Marra, of USB Calabria, also recalls that “many port companies are going on strike today”. «We are here – he explains – with students in a historical period that sees a new enthusiasm and it is an important thing. History teaches us that when workers and students have embraced the same causes, something has always improved in our country. There is an unpredictable and uncontainable ferment in Italy.” According to Marra «it is a clear sign of social anger. There has been a lot of talk in recent days about bad teachers, about secret strategies behind the streets, but what we see is that there is real anger clearly due to the social difficulty which is objective.” Alongside the students and the USB union there is also Orsa Porti. For its representative Domenico Macrí «Reggio and the South must also give their response to wrong political government choices. If the aim is to create war economies by cutting social services, education, healthcare and transport, it is normal for Reggio to also take to the streets.”
