Reggio Calabria is preparing to welcome a great classic of Italian cycling that combines sports, landscape and territorial identity.
After the official presentation in the CONI presidential room in Rome, the official countdown for the 67th edition of the cycling tour of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria began, scheduled for Friday 12 April 2025.

The route includes the departure from Bova Marina and the arrival on the Falcomatà promenade in Reggio Calabria, for a total of 183.3 kilometers with 1,800 meters in altitude.

The Flag of the Via will wave for 14 teams, including the Italian national team, and different professional and continental formations. The event represents the third stage of the Italian Cup of the Regions, with precious points up for the individual and team ranking.

The cycling tour of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria confirms its historical and strategic role within the national cycling scene. Born as the Giro of the Province of Reggio Calabria in 1920, it has featured over the years the greatest champions of Italian and international cycling.

Free metabolic screening and meetings with experts will be available to cycling enthusiasts and not in a unique setting like that of the ‘most beautiful kilometer in Italy’ – Giro of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria scheduled for Saturday 12 April. In fact, the “Novo Nordisk Health Village” will be set up on the Falcomatà Lungomare of Reggio Calabria, a space entirely dedicated to the population to promote healthy lifestyles and to encourage prevention in a context that combines and underlines the link between sport, well -being and health. Part of the International City Project for Better Health, in Italy created thanks to a partnership between Anci, Health City Institute and Novo Nordisk, the initiative was born with the ambition to defeat chronic diseases that are not transmissible such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases, through the promotion of healthy lifestyles and this year is Health Partner of the Italian Cup of the League’s regions of the League’s regions of professional cycling, of which this prestigious race is part.

The program for citizens at the Village will begin at 10.00 with free metabolic screening: for a couple of hours, thanks to the collaboration of the “Rotary International” service association, Domenico Calacocardiologist at the ASP of Reggio Calabria e Pier Francesco Tripodiendocrinologist at the large metropolitan hospital in Reggio Calabria, they will be at the service of citizens to carry out a series of tests, such as the measurement of the circumference of life, the calculation of body mass index and pressure control.

This activity is added to the commitment of Novo Nordisk to the prevention of obesity and cardiovascular diseases started this year also thanks to the support not conditioned to the national campaign for the prevention of obesity and cardiometabolic risk “for a healthy heart, it counts every centimeter”, promoted by the Italian Foundation for the heart (Fipc) and which enjoys the patronage of the Ministry of Health.

Obesity represents an important risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack, stroke and heart failure, responsible for 6.3 percent of mortality in the Calabrian metropolitan city, well above the national average (5.2 percent).

The percentage of excess weight people is continuously increasing in our country, this for the worsening of lifestyles, from incorrect eating habits to sedentary lifestyle, especially in urban centers and, according to Istat estimates, Calabria is one of the most obese regions of Italy. In 2023 he concerned over one out of two adults, of which more than 12 percent with obesity. Not better the data on the youngest: according to the investigation of the National Surveillance Institute Okkio to Health, 37.8 percent of children had a weight excess, of which 15.5 percent were with obesity, also these values ​​well beyond the national average.

From 2.00 pm, therefore, space for the “Driving Change Arena”, an important moment of debate during which doctors, local institutions, patient and expert associations will confront the issues of urban health, the promotion of healthy behaviors and the prevention of chronic diseases that cannot be transmitted through physical activity and sport.
