A penitentiary police officer on duty in the prison of Reggio Calabria San Pietro was attacked during the phases of returning prisoners to their cells from walks. «Yesterday’s attack on returning from walks, one of the most exposed and risky phases of duty shifts – states Pasquale Montesano, deputy general secretary of the Osapp union – demonstrates the total impotence of local leaders in guaranteeing security and managing prison crime. Those who administer the facility do not have the tools, or the firmness, to stem the violence of the inmates. On the other hand, we note with deep bitterness that those same administrators become extraordinarily diligent, rigid and incisive only when it comes to pointing fingers, initiating proceedings or cracking down on prison police personnel.” «We express the utmost solidarity and best wishes for a speedy recovery to our injured colleague – he continues – but solidarity is no longer enough if double standards are applied in the area: tolerance towards those who commit crimes and inflexibility towards those who serve the State. The post-event emergency transfers are only palliatives that certify the management failure.” Osapp calls for “an increase in personnel, the provision of adequate defense tools and a review of the rules of engagement, especially in critical moments of the prison day”.
