A few moments that made the difference between life and death. This is what happened around 12.30 yesterday on the A2 Mediterranean Motorway, in the area of Reggio Calabria, where a Carabinieri patrol, passing by chance along the roadway, suddenly found itself in front of the scene of a very serious road accident that had just occurred.
A car, for reasons still under investigation, crashed violently into New Jersey after losing control. The impact was devastating: the vehicle began to overturn several times, ending its journey a few tens of meters ahead, completely destroyed.
In the violent succession of rollovers, a 7-year-old child, who was traveling with his mother, was thrown out of the passenger compartment, ending up disastrously on the asphalt.
The police were the first to reach the little boy. Together with a passing motorist, a first aid operator from the province of Latina, they immediately provided assistance to the mother and child. Having ascertained with relief that the child was still breathing, they began to talk to him without ever interrupting contact with him, keeping him conscious and reassuring him in those very long minutes that preceded the arrival of the 118 personnel, forced to reach the site of the accident from the opposite road.
The child’s condition made every second precious. Having assessed the impossibility of guaranteeing a sufficiently rapid transfer by ambulance, the doctor and the nurse decided to board the police car with the little one in their arms. Without hesitation, the soldiers opened the way to the emergency room, allowing the healthcare team to reach the hospital in the shortest time possible and entrust the child to the care of the doctors.
The little boy is currently hospitalized with a reserved prognosis. His condition is constantly monitored by health workers but, fortunately, his life is not in danger. The mother was also rescued and entrusted to the care of medical staff.
Coincidentally, the Carabinieri passed through that stretch of motorway in the moments immediately following the accident. A presence which, combined with clarity, preparation and timely intervention, made it possible to ensure immediate help for the child in the most critical moments, when every moment could be decisive.
