Urban regeneration work has been completed in via Macello Vecchio, in Messina, occupied by the slum until 2022. The rehabilitation work, carried out by the Commissioner’s Structure, has transformed a highly degraded area into an area of great historical value between Viale Principe Umberto and the Superintendency of Cultural and Environmental Heritage, one of the most beautiful panoramic areas of Messina.
Where there were shacks against the historic walls of Charles V, today, thanks to the works carried out, there is space for a pedestrian path immersed in a set of “rain gardens” which ends in the amphitheater in front of the former church of the Good Shepherd. The amount to carry out the work, after the variant appraisal, was approximately 1.8 million euros. Via Macello Vecchio, thus radically transformed, will be named after Caravaggio, as decided by the Messina City Council, which wanted to highlight the link between the painter and the city which profoundly influenced his artistic career.
The urban regeneration model applied by sub-commissioner Santi Trovato in the area can be replicated in other redevelopment areas where rebuilding is not envisaged. The demolition of the 15 barracks close to the Renaissance walls and the Arch of Christ began in 2022 and the works, based on a project by RTI Secured Solution, Pan associati and the Angelo Loggia engineering firm, were entrusted to the Ciro Menotti national cooperative consortium of Ravenna and carried out by the companies Emma Lavori Coop of San Cataldo and Ars Costruzioni of San Filippo del Mela.
