News of the cuts comes months after the retail giant’s CEO warned employees they could be replaced by artificial intelligence. The Seattle company plans to cut up to 30,000 jobs starting today in an effort to cut costs and reverse a massive hiring drive that began at the height of the pandemic, which sparked an extraordinary, if transitory, surge in demand for online shopping. While the layoffs represent a small portion of Amazon’s vast global workforce of 1.55 million employees, they would affect about 10% of its roughly 350,000 corporate employees. CNBC called it the largest layoff in the company’s history.
