Extremely violent fire during the night in Santa Teresa di Riva. The flames erupted around 3am on the seafront inside the “Bricolage Carnabuci” hardware store and spread to the ground floor and rear premises, destroying the business. Once the alarm was raised, the owner rushed to the scene and the firefighters from the Letojanni detachment arrived, but in a short time the flames, fueled by flammable materials, plastic, paints and solvents, quickly spread, also hitting a shed at the back and generating a dense column of black smoke visible from a long distance. Firefighters tried to contain the fire from several sides, also working from a nearby houseand they are still working to tame it with the intervention of various vehicles also from the Messina Provincial Command.
The carabinieri of the local station and of the Radiomobile Unit of the Taormina Company evacuated the neighboring houses, waking up the residents and making them leave quickly, given that the flames also threatened nearby buildings. The local police diverted seafront traffic towards Catania onto State Road 114 to facilitate rescue operations. The causes of the fire are still unknown.
