San Fili, the Il Riccio group attacks: «More than suburbs, we are at the center of development»

San Fili is not a municipality belonging to the so-called internal area. It does not have the characteristics of an isolated community. The members of the political group “Il Riccio” are convinced of this and in a note disagree with the mayor’s declarations the day after his election to the Uncem executive. «Defining San Fili as an internal area means – writes Peppe Esposito, coordinator of the political group, in a note – suffering from a total political myopia which has repercussions not only on a social level but also on the vision of the future development of the town on the outskirts of the capital city and above all attached to the university area». A premise from the coordinator of the political association from which one could already deduce, thus, a priori, the program with which, evidently, “Il Riccio” intends to propose itself in the next electoral round. Very close to the capital city, attached to the university area and above all the gateway, connection, glue with the Tyrrhenian territory. These are the elements that make Esposito say that «San Fili is a town with its own specific identity and that without the contradictions into which the current administration falls it should rise to the role of a “zipper”». A definition – an element of no small importance – the latter which opens the debate on broader scenarios and above all, underlines Esposito, “due to a clear political myopia: never explored”. In short, Esposito and his group have a vision and in this «San Fili is not an isolated suburb, but a crossroads of strategic importance. Its location on the main route of the Ss 107 “Silana Crotonese” makes it a hub of passage and exchange between the hinterland, the sea and the urban area of Cosenza. From the west, it represents the gateway to Cosenza and the most relevant university services in the region; from the east – Esposito points out – it acts as an access point for the Tyrrhenian Sea and seaside tourism, with railway hubs such as Paola”. The political intervention focuses on the need to overcome the welfare and peripheral vision, embracing instead a perspective of connection and integration. San Fili must become a “zipper municipality”, a hub of services, education, tourist reception and industrial development, which unites and enhances the resources of the entire vast Cosenza-Rende-mountain-coast area. Unfortunately, over the last twenty years, little has been done for this natural vocation, and the policies adopted have focused on an inefficient public building stock, instead of aiming for targeted investments and strategic development policies. According to the supporters of this vision, San Fili must no longer be considered a suburb, but a strategic partner with the urban area of Rende and Cosenza, capable of offering services and infrastructures that strengthen the entire territorial system. The future path, also shared by the “Riccio” movement, aims at a change of mentality and policies capable of attracting quality investments, developing an integrated tourist and residential offer and fully enhancing its geographical position. Only by adopting this strategy will San Fili truly be able to establish itself as a protagonist of local development, transforming its potential into opportunities for progress for the entire region.
