Two doctors working at the Sant’Agata Militello hospital will have to defend themselves from the accusation of negligent liability for personal injuries in the healthcare sector, having been sent to trial by the magistrate of the Court of Patti Eugenio Aliquò. The facts date back to the summer of 2022, when a woman suffered the amputation of a leg following severe septicemia. The patient’s family members, represented by the lawyer Massimiliano Fabio, therefore asked for any liability to be ascertained regarding the healthcare treatment provided to their relative.
According to reports, in fact, the 43-year-old was admitted to the emergency room of the Sant’Agata Militello hospital following severe pain in her lower limbs and difficulty walking, but was sent home a few hours after the administration of antibiotic therapy with the suggestion that she remain at rest.
A few days later, however, her condition worsened, so much so that she had to be transported by ambulance back to the Santagatese emergency room and from there transferred to the “Gaetano Martino” hospital in Messina, where the doctors had no choice but to intervene with amputation. of the limb, to avoid death. The woman therefore remained in intensive care for several days before being declared out of danger and returning home.
The charge made against Maria Sofia Lo Balboemergency room doctor, and surgeon Giuseppe Rubinowho provided the specialist advice, hypothesizes, on the basis of the reports of the consultants appointed by the Prosecutor’s Office, the imprudence in having caused the worsening of the patient’s sepsis outbreak, omitting the execution of a radiological examination which could have allowed the diagnosis of the risk of gas gangrene and implement targeted therapy.
