“The foreign policy of a large country like Italy cannot be reduced to waiting and interpreting what Donald Trump will say or do.” It is the attack by the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein on the government led by Giorgia Meloni.

«The issues are coming home to roost, even for Meloni – continues Schlein –. We would have expected a clear stance: Greenland cannot be touched, it cannot be sold or bought, we defend the territorial integrity of a member state of the European Union.”

“True European solidarity is missing”

According to the dem leader, Italy is showing political weakness on an international level. «For the first time our country appears politically incapable of expressing true European solidarity», he states.

The marginality risk for Italy

«If your only ambition is to be the most Trumpian government in Europe – concludes Schlein – it is inevitable to slide into marginality and enter into contradiction with the rest of the European Union».
