A school complex at risk of collapse due to the conditions of the building is at the center of an investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Crotone which has notified the notice of conclusion of the investigations to the mayor of Isola Capo Rizzuto, in the province of Crotone, Maria Grazia Vittimberga, and to two officials of the institution accused, in various capacities and in complicity, of danger of collapse of buildings, fraud in public supplies and ideological falsification of public documents, with the aggravating circumstance of having committed the facts with abuse of public powers.

Security risks in the «Karol Wojtyla» complex

The investigations, conducted by the Carabinieri of the Tenenza of Isola Capo Rizzuto, concerned the «Karol Wojtyla» complex in the Le Castella area which houses the primary and nursery school and would have revealed a picture of presumed danger of collapse of the aforementioned public buildings, with consequent exposure to risk for the safety of pupils, teachers and school staff.

The responsibilities alleged against the suspects

The mayor is under investigation for failing to adopt, despite full awareness of the state of structural deterioration, the necessary and urgent measures to guarantee the safety of the buildings; the manager of the Public Works sector of the Municipality Antonio Otranto, for having allowed the implementation of extraordinary maintenance interventions deemed unsuitable for safety, carried out in the absence of an executive project and in non-compliance with the technical prescriptions provided by the consultants and the Fire Brigade; the director of Works Antonio Vittimberga, for the execution of works deemed non-compliant and for the alleged ideological falsehood committed in a public act, having certified the regular execution in a “workmanlike manner” of interventions which, according to the accusation, were limited and did not resolve the structural danger.
