“The presence of the candidate Federico Basile, this morning at Palazzo Zanca, during the signing of the hiring contracts for the new traffic police was certainly out of place and outlined an incorrect attitude in the conduct of the electoral campaign”. Mayoral candidate Marcello Scurria declares this.
“Basile, who had already called the winners of the competition without any reason shortly before his resignation, today presented himself again to the Municipality, perhaps as a free citizen, but certainly in an inappropriate manner. We send our best wishes to all the women and men who start their new path to serve the Community, but we remind the candidate who probably intends to exploit these hirings that they constitute only a necessary, late and insufficient act for the real needs of the city.
Basile’s response: “In what capacity does he speak?”
“Marcello Scurria wonders in what capacity I was at Palazzo Zanca. Interesting question. But it is natural to return it to the sender: in what capacity is he speaking? And above all, in what capacity does he construct a controversy over a public moment?” Thus Federico Basile responds to Scurria’s statements. “The event was open to everyone. No reserved invitation, no side door, no special pass. I entered like any citizen. If the issue intrigued him so much, all he had to do was introduce himself: it wasn’t forbidden. I chose to be there because it was right to be there. We’re talking about the hiring of new Municipal Police officers: not a detail, but an important, historical step for the city. Evidently what’s annoying is precisely the fact that these are concrete results, carried out by my administration. Constructed controversies don’t change reality. The facts, instead, they remain.”
