The photographer Sebastião Salgado died At 81: the Académie des Beaux-Arts announces it in Paris. The news of Salgado’s death was confirmed by the Institute Terra, a non -governmental organization founded by Salgado.
“Sebastião has been much more than one of the greatest photographers of our time. Together with his life partner, Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado, sowed hope where there was devastation and made the idea that environmental restoration is also a profound gesture of love for humanity. His goal revealed the world and its contradictions; his life, the power of the transformative action.
Sebastiao Salgado had lived for a long time in Paris and since 1990 he had stopped photographing people by concentrating his activity on social commitment, environmental priorities and sustainability. In Brazil he had detected a company on which he replanted over two and a half million trees, recreating a forest in which 150 species are present.
Born in 1944 in Minas Gerais, Salgado graduated in Economics and began to photograph as a professional in 1973. In 1994 he founded the ‘Amazonas Images’ agency with his wife Lélia with his wife Léliadedicated exclusively to his work. He has traveled in more than one hundred countries for his photographic projects, which became extraordinary successful exhibitions in museums and galleries from all over the world and books-capolavoro among which Terra (1997) stand out, portraits of children on the way (2000), Africa (2007), Genesis (2013), Dream perfume (2015), Kuwait. A Desert On Fire (2016), Gold (2019) and Amazônia (2021).
The last chapter of his research on the crucial themes of life on Earth is in the 54 photographs of great and great format almost all unpublished choices for the exhibition ‘Glaciai’, at the Mart of Rovereto until 21 September. Ten shots stand up to 11 January suspended in the ‘great emptiness’ of the Trento Science Museum. The project, curated by Lélia Wanick, wife of the artist, was born from an idea of the Trento Film Festival in collaboration with the two museum structures and with contrast on the occasion of the year for the conservation of glaciers proclaimed in 2025 by the United Nations. The artist, who had had to give up for health reasons to intervene at the inauguration of the exhibition, had postponed his participation in September.
