The news had been in the air for weeks, but the official announcement completely changes its specific weight. Jannik Sinner will not be the spiritual and technical (above all technical) guide of the Italian national team which is preparing to participate in the new Davis Cup edition with the titles of the reigning champion team (for two consecutive years). The fight to win the third Salad Bowl in a row immediately becomes very complicated, after the South Tyrolean tennis player announced his withdrawal. The Italian captain, Filippo Volandri, revealed it and was echoed by the number two in the world: the 2025 edition of the Davis Cup will not see Sinner at the starting line. The star of the last two editions, in fact, has chosen the path of downsizing his calendar. Priority, essentially, was given to the preparation of the Australian Open, the first seasonal slam of 2026, which the Italian champion won in both 2024 and 2025.
An assist too tempting for the smash of Sinner’s historic detractors, who for several months did not have many arguments to tease the 24-year-old as in the past: from his Italian origins but not too much to the suspicions of doping, passing through the lack of empathy and excessive discretion of the athlete born in San Candido (he even dared to refuse the role of guest in Sanremo!) and arriving at the merciless comparison with the “phenomenon” Alcaraz. And to Sinner’s most punctilious critics are now added the “forgetful”, those who now feel hurt by the rejection, forgetting an essential aspect: if Italy has achieved Davis’ consecutive encore, it is mainly due to the number two in the world who has always been decisive in every single match of both editions: and now, who has legitimately decided to take a breather (the images of Sinner in physical difficulty in some of the latest tournaments), we must not get angry but understand this choice. The god of tennis has kissed Italy which who knows how many more years will be able to enjoy this smacking of lips on the forehead. Woe to forget it.
