Paris Olympics are now Jannik Sinner’s priority. The South Tyrolean, world number 1, after his exit in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, defeated in five sets by Medvedev, preferred to stop to recover, following the advice of the doctors and deciding to give up the ATP 250 tournament in Bastad scheduled for next week and chosen precisely in view of the Olympic tournament at the end of the month.
Sinner announced his decision in an Instagram story: “I’m sorry to announce that I have to withdraw from the Bastad tournament next week due to fatigue. It’s not an easy decision because I would have liked to play, but my team and doctors advised me that it would be better to take some time to rest and recover,” Jannik posted on social media. “I hope to be able to play Bastad in the future because I’ve heard it’s a great tournament.”
The illness he suffered yesterday during the third set of the Wimbledon quarter-final against the Russian Daniil Medvedev (probably a virus, as later explained by Sinner himself) led the team and doctors to advise the South Tyrolean to take a moment of rest after the efforts of this first part of 2024 which saw him climb the ATP rankings and become, the first Italian in history, number one in the world.
Now Sinner has time to recharge his batteries in view of the five-ring event where the South Tyrolean will show up with great expectations: «The grass season is over, now there are the Olympics, one of the main events of the year – he said yesterday in a press conference – one last effort on clay and then I will concentrate on the US Open and the other big tournaments on hard courts, a surface I like to play on».
