Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and the League more and more determined to avoid the blocking of the Euro 5 diesel coming in some regions of the North. In fact, if you do not intervene promptly from 1 October next they risk not being able to circulate over a million cars in Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna.

“As already reiterated, the League is engaged at the local and national level, starting with the vice premier and minister Matteo Salvini, to avoid the blocking of the Euro 5 diesel expected in the coming months in some regions”, says the party after the Minister of Transport a few weeks ago had announced that “we are trying to avoid the blockade”.

As already in 2023, when the Council of Ministers stopped the ban on the Euro 5 diesel decided by Piedmont. The decree approved then by the CDM engaged the regions of the Padano basin, precisely Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Veneto, to update the plans for air quality and established that in the municipalities above 30,000 inhabitants the blocking of the Euro 5 diesels became an obligation from October 1, 2025. The four regions of the North have therefore equipped themselves. In December, the Piedmont Regional Council approved the update of the plan for air quality, which also provides for the blocking of Euro 5 diesel vehicles from October 1, 2025 in the municipalities with more than 30 thousand inhabitants. In Lombardy the limitations will gradually enter into force on the basis of the different categories (from October 1, 2025 for cars, from 1 October 2026 for the M2, N1 and N2 categories and from 1 October 2027 for all the others) in the municipalities of Varese, Lecco, Vigevano, Abbiategrasso and S.Giuliano Milanese. The Euro 5 diesel cars in circulation in 2023 in Italy, according to the data of the Anfia (Automobilistic industry supply chain association), are over 3.7 million, on a circulating car park of over 40.9 million cars. The Euro 5 cars are those registered starting from January 1, 2011. The new battle of the League against the ban began in recent weeks. On May 17, Salvini’s party was said to be “engaged, in the regions and to the government, to avoid the blockage” and Salvini said: “As a minister of transport I do not believe that sustainability passes through the condemnation of those who use the car, the bike or the van to go to work”, warning that “those are cracks, are follies that have other markets”.

Federcarrozzieri: “Stop Euro 5 in Piedmont will be a tsunami”

“The stop to the Euro 5 diesel cars that will start in Piedmont on October 1st will cause a tsunami effect on the automotive market market leading to enormous increases in the prices of cars to the whole damage of motorists in the region”. This was stated by Federcarrozzieri, the Italian Autocarrozzerie Association, commenting on the measures provided for by the decree that introduces the blocking of Euro 5 diesel vehicles in the municipalities with over 30 thousand inhabitants. “In Piedmont – he informs a note – about 236 thousand vehicles from next October will become” outlaw “and will not be able to circulate on weekdays within the large municipalities, from 8:30 to 18:30. These are certainly not dated or obsolete cars, registered between 2009 and 2015, the year in which it passed to the Euro 6 standard ». According to Federcarrozzieri “the new measures will lead to a situation of chaos to the detriment of motorists” because “the greatest demand for cars in Normà capable of circulating in the municipalities concerned will make the stars splash the seconds of the used in Piedmont” and “even the new lists will suffer retouches up to the dealers”. “In Italy – explains the president of Federcarrozzieri, Davide Galli – we have the oldest circulating car park in Europe, and no government intervened with effective incentive policies for the purchase of new cars. A situation that now turns into enormous economic damage for motorists, forced to choose between the purchase of a new car or leave the car in the garage. In the face of strongly restrictive measures of the freedom of circulation of users, the Piedmont Region must now recognize incentives and subsidies to those who move on to an ecological car, in order to compensate for an evident imbalance that risks also leading to legal disputes against the administration “.

Cancel diesel block euro 5, ok in Motion Lega in Lombardy

The Lombardy Regional Council has approved a motion of the League who asks the government to open a table with the other regions of the Padano basin to find a solution and cancel the block to the Euro 5 diesel which will start from next October 1st. «The limitations to diesel Euro 5 must be suspended and postponed and alternative solutions that take into consideration the geographical, economic and social characteristics of the Po Valley are found. The stop to the Euro 5 diesel scheduled from next October 1 – said the group leader of the League in Lombardy Alessandro Corbetta – was imposed by Europe to the regions of the Basin Agreement, a Brussels directive which, as a League, contest because it has always ignored the peculiarity of the Po Valley, a territory among the most industrialized and populous enclosed between the Alps and the Apennines “. Among other things, concludes Corbetta, “with these prohibitions, the Val Padana would be the only area in the world in which it is forbidden to travel with the Euro 5 diesel cars, an unacceptable thing”.
