A sudden shock overwhelms Calabrian politics. “I never thought I had to share with you news of this kind. For the first time in my life I received a guarantee notice. They tell me that I return to a wider investigation, which involves more people, for corruption. To me, that I managed this region with absolute rigor,” said Occhiuto.
Occhiuto, who has guided Calabria since 2021, has strongly rejected any accusation, underlining the absolute transparency of its work and reiterating that she has nothing to hide.
“Usually it is said ‘I am serene, I trust in the judiciary’. I am not serene, a piper. For me it is an infamous thing, it is as if they had accused me of murder,” the governor thundered. “It is an unlikely thing that I can even be only remotely approached to the hypothesis of corruption”.
Occhiuto said he immediately asked to be questioned by the magistrates, while not yet knowing the contested facts in detail. “Even in the dark,” he specified, “because I am sure of how I have behaved in these years. I have nothing to fear.”
During his declaration, the president claimed his consistency, remembering that he has always been a supporter of the rigorous action of the judiciary in a complex territory like Calabria: “In recent years I have said that we must investigate all the way. Now I say the same thing: investigate, check me all”.
