The urgent works of removal of the huge amount of material collapsed on the houses that are close to the riverbeds of the streams of Stromboli, seriously compromised by the flood that affected the island last October 19 and the subsequent storms that occurred until the recent month of May, kicked off.
“The Region – said President Renato Schifani, appointed commissioner for these interventions just last April 22 – is operating with the utmost speed, for the interventions of his own competence, to restore the safety conditions for the inhabitants and stability of a territory as attractive for tourists as it is vulnerable and in need of protections”.
The erupting material that deposits and accumulates on the walls of the volcano, already affected by fires and without vegetation due to the persistent drought, has not consolidated and, at each storm, triggers collapses of boulders, lava stone, ashes. Elements that, scrolling along the access roads on the slopes, made inside the streams, affect the houses to which you can access directly from the river riverbeds.
The bulldozers, sent by the District Basin Authority of the Presidency of the Region which is a subject of the interventions, have opened up to the Russian mountain stream and, soon, they will also begin on the Gritti del San Bartolo, San Vincenzo and Machichi. After the characterization, the landslide will be used, if possible, for the reputation of the beaches of the island subject to erosion. To avoid further damage, and to die of the realization of imposing structural consolidation interventions, there is also the creation of a para-colored barrier of about 120 square meters upstream of the inhabited center, with protective functions against any future flows of debris.
