An extension has arrived for the state of crisis and emergency declared on April 1st following the phenomena of hydrogeological instability on Via Garipoli in Taormina, the main access road to the city on the north side. Yesterday, the Schifani government extended it until 1 April 2026 to start new interventions and complete those underway. A period of time that will allow us to complete the integrated mobility plan necessary to guarantee the accessibility of the historic center of Taormina, with the technical-scientific support of the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (Dicar) of the University of Catania thanks to which the current state of mobility and the transport system will be analyzed to identify the most suitable infrastructural and management solutions also to ensure the continuity of connections in the event of critical events.
Furthermore, thanks to the extension, it will be possible to complete the urgent and non-deferrable interventions started in recent months for which the Region has allocated 750,000 euros from the reserve fund for unforeseen expenses, half of the total sum of 1.5 million euros, the remaining part of which is paid by the Municipality of Taormina. Medium-term structural interventions will be planned in the coming months with coordination between all the bodies involved, after a technical table had already been held in recent months with the mayors of the district to examine critical issues and evaluate the interventions.
Following the first resolution of 1 April, the general manager of the regional Civil Protection Department, Salvatore Cocina, was appointed commissioner delegate for the coordination of the interventions, while the mayor Cateno De Luca was appointed as the implementing body.
