The 2025-2034 national electricity network development plan was at the center of the meeting which was held today in Catanzaro between Terna and the Calabria Region.

During the presentation, the representatives of Terna illustrated the main contents of the plan, which provides For Calabria investments for over 130 million euros in the next decadesor. Among the central elements, the efficient territorial programming is distinguished, an innovative model that allows you to manage the growing connection requests in coordinated and sustainable way. This is accompanied by the creation of infrastructures designed to strengthen the safety of the system and increase the intrazonal capacity, facilitating the exchange of energy within the market areas, for the benefit of the integration of renewable sources and the reduction of local congestions.

In this scenario, Calabria plays a strategic role: it is Among the regions of Southern Italy that record a high demand for connections to the network by plants powered by renewable sources, A trend that significantly affects the entire South and the islands. A growth supported by adequate infrastructure development therefore represents a concrete opportunity for enhancement and development for the territory.

The regional electrical system currently develops two main 380 kV directors between the provinces of Reggio Calabria and Cosenza, connected to the transformation stations of Rizziconi and Laino. This network represents the supporting axis on which the main works provided for by the Plan develop.

Among these, the submarine connection in alternating current to 380 kV Bolano–annunziata, authorized in September 2024 and currently under construction, will combine Sicily with Calabria. The work will allow to increase the interconnection capacity between the island and the continent, improving the safety and reliability of the electrical system in the South.

Also in the north of the region there is the realization of the 380 kV Laino -Altomonte electrode, designed to increase the exchange capacity with southern Italy. The intervention, which uses existing infrastructures in part such as the “Laino -Rossano” section, will also allow the removal of over 90 km of airlines, of which 59 inside the Pollino Park.

A further strategic project is the new Calusia -Mesoraca – Belcastro -Catanzaro line, accompanied by a large rationalization of the local network, with the demolition of 83 km of lines and the removal of 285 supports, for the benefit of the environment and the quality of the service.

The picture of the interventions is completed by the Ionian -Tyrrenic ridge, a new infrastructure in continuous current part of the Hypergrid project, which will connect Ionian Sicily to Lazio, passing through Calabria. The work consists of two sections: the first, Hvdc Ionian Link, will connect Priolo (Syracuse) to Rossano (Cosenza); The second will connect Rossano to Montecorvino (Salerno) and then up to Latina, including a submarine section and the reuse of existing electrode for the Earth’s section, in order to minimize the environmental impact.

With the presentation of the development plan of the National Electricity Network 2025-2034 to the Calabria Region, Terna confirms its commitment to actively collaborate with local institutions to carry out interventions in line with the energy future of the territory. In Calabria, the company manages a network of over 3,400 km of high and high voltage lines and 40 electric stations.
