The budget law arrives in the Chamber without modifications

The final phase of the parliamentary process of the 2026 budget maneuver began with the start of work in the Budget Committee of the Chamber. After the arrival of the text approved by the Senate in the Chamber, the deputies met to examine the amendments presented by the opposition: hundreds of them were examined, but almost all of them were declared admissible only for discussion and not for concrete approval, given that no modification proposal from the majority was accepted.

During the operations in the Commission, while the interventions of the opposition representatives followed one another, a moment of political-parliamentary tension emerged linked to workplace democracy. The voice of the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, rang out from the speakers, according to which “parliamentary democracy means that Parliament decides”, a phrase which relaunched the internal debate, also thanks to the re-proposal of an old audio from Meloni herself when she was in opposition and asked for more space for discussion on the budget law.

The response of the President of the Commission was calm but significant: «Thank you, Mr Mancini, you achieved your aim», effectively closing that parenthesis.

Already in the early afternoon it was learned that the opposition had filed a total of over 700 amendments to the budget law for examination in the Chamber, but that the process was set up in such a way as to avoid substantial changes to the text, leaving it substantially “armored” compared to the version approved in the Senate.

After the work in the Commission, the final green light has been given to the text, which will be expressed without any changes compared to what was approved by the Senate.

The majority therefore confirmed its desire to bring a text to the Chamber without reopening the discussion on the opposition’s individual modification proposals. With the mandate given to the rapporteurs to report to the Chamber, the measure was formally launched to the next phase: landing in the Montecitorio hemicycle for the general discussion.

Here, after the interventions of the parliamentary groups, the government will raise the question of confidence on the text, a move already announced to speed up approval before the end of the legislative year. The vote of confidence is expected in the next few hours, preceding the final one on the budget law.
