A system built on false documents, jobs that never existed and fictitious residences. This, in short, is the investigative hypothesis that led to the closure of the preliminary investigations against 61 people, believed to be involved, in various capacities, in a mechanism aimed at encouraging the irregular stay of foreign citizens on Italian territory.
The mechanism
According to what was reconstructed by the investigators, the suspects would have prepared false employment contracts and fictitious rental contracts, used to obtain registration in the registers of the resident population and thus allow the issuing or renewal of the residence permit.
In some cases, simulated marriages would also have been organized between Italian citizens and foreign women, while a public official would have certified the false residence records to facilitate the procedures.
A patronage is also involved
The investigations also identified a patronage in Lamezia Terme which, despite being formally managed by unemployed individuals and recipients of citizenship income, would have received money to take care of practices related to fictitious hiring.
Citizenship income revoked
Following the checks, the benefit of citizenship income was revoked from 55 people, who had falsely declared that they had resided in Italy for at least ten years.
Among the 61 suspects there are 47 non-EU citizens and 14 Italians. The charges, for various reasons, include aiding and abetting illegal immigration, forgery, fraud and undue receipt of public funds.
