«Three years after the Steccato di Cutro shipwreck, Calabria gathers in silence and respect for the 94 victims of a tragedy that has marked the collective conscience of our land and the entire country. Today is a day of remembrance, of piety and responsibility.” The Calabria Democratic Party, led by Senator Nicola Irto, stated this in a note.

«Cutro – the dems continue – is the symbol of a European and national failure in the management of migratory flows. It is the painful sign of what happens when propaganda and ideological closures prevail. In these three years, the Mediterranean has continued to be the scene of tragedies, while public debate has often been reduced to slogans. Migration policies cannot be limited to combating smugglers, which remains necessary, nor can they be based exclusively on emergency logic. Legal and safe channels of entry are needed, a complete reform of the European asylum law, a system of mandatory redistribution between member states and significant investments in cooperation with countries of origin and transit.”

“Border regions cannot be left alone”

The Calabria Democratic Party calls on the European Union «to deeply assume responsibility, because the border regions cannot be left alone. We need adequate resources, common tools and shared policies that go beyond the country of first arrival principle and guarantee dignified welcome and integration.” «The national government should choose the path of institutional cooperation and planning. Governing migratory phenomena – states the Calabria Democratic Party – means combining humanity and legality, security and rights, rigor and solidarity. Calabria will continue to do its part with dignity, as local communities and mayors have demonstrated in the most difficult days. It is up to Europe and the national government to take responsibility for courageous, just and shared choices, so that no other sea becomes a cemetery of innocents.”
