Users, citizens and traders visibly penalised by the closure of the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, in the section between the Rometta and Boccetta junctions, from 10 pm to 6 am on Monday to Saturday nights, and from midnight to 6 am on Sunday nights only. The measure, in force from 1 July, is expected to last until 25 July. There is therefore much concern for the possible negative repercussions on the economic system of the vast hinterland, which includes the territories of Rometta, Saponara and Villafranca which, especially during the summer season, take on oxygen.
The mayors of the three municipalities expressed these concerns, acting as spokespersons for the inevitable inconveniences that are being faced. “In the very early morning yesterday I was at the Prefecture participating in the roundtable of the Public Order and Safety Committee regarding the summer season and in particular the nightlife – declared the mayor of Villafranca Giuseppe Cavallaro -. I expressed the complaints and concerns of the owners of the businesses present in my territory, which are similar to those of Rometta and partly of Saponara, which will have very serious repercussions in terms of attendance resulting from the night-time closure of the Rometta-Messina stretch. The response from the prefect was that at this time the absolute priority must be given to the reopening of the Ritiro viaduct with related works, which would lead to a significant improvement in traffic flows and road safety considering the enormous number of people who travel in the province of Messina”.
