«The transatlantic partnership is unique and, as always, allies are stronger together. As regards decisions relating to the European Union, these are made by the European Union, for the European Union, including those relating to our regulatory autonomy, the protection of free speech and the rules-based international order.” This is how the European Commission comments on the strategy for American national security published yesterday by Donald Trump’s administration.

“We welcome the strong priority that the Strategy places on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. Europe and the United States share the responsibility to support a just and lasting peace. We also note the attention that the Strategy devotes to developments in the Western Hemisphere, which are critical to the security of the United States,” says a Commission spokesperson.

“We fully agree that ‘Europe remains strategically and culturally vital to the United States and that ‘transatlantic trade remains one of the pillars of the global economy and American prosperity.’

“We are strengthening our defense capabilities and our defense industrial base. Europe is massively increasing investments in defense both to strengthen its own security and to continue to make a decisive contribution to the Alliance, together with a concerted effort to strengthen the defense industry and produce critical capabilities. For this reason the Commission has created the conditions for an additional investment package of 800 billion euros in March 2025”, states the European executive.

“Transatlantic trade and investment remain an important resource for both the European and US economies. We will continue to engage constructively while ensuring Europe’s competitiveness,” the spokesperson continues.
