What happened to the Gioia Tauro regasification terminal? The infrastructure continues to be considered strategic by the Government, despite no progress being seen in the construction phase. Reassuring in this sense is the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, which through the deputy minister of the League Vannia Gava responded to a question from the deputy Antonino Iaria of the 5 Star Movement.
Gava clearly specified that «the works for the construction and operation of onshore liquid natural gas regasification terminals, as well as the related infrastructures, are considered of public utility, non-deferrable and urgent as provided, at national level, by article 2 of the legislative decree no. 181 of 2023. This – he added – will allow us to ensure an additional cumulative regasification capacity of 20 billion cubic meters per year, which will contribute to the consolidation and resilience of the Italian energy supply network and to a lower energy dependence of the country”. And again: «We remind you that, at a European level, there is the possibility of creating a growing number of infrastructures to encourage the use of alternative fuels to oil. In this sense, the work is part of the infrastructure necessary for the implementation of strategic projects for the country’s energy transition included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr) and in the guidelines of the Integrated Regional Energy and Climate Plan (Priec), as well as the achievement of the objectives set by the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (Pniec). Finally, it is worth pointing out that the construction of the plant would favor the development of not only the port area, but also the rear port area with the possibility of building a large agri-food district, taking advantage of the cold plate necessary for regasification”. Cold plate which – it is worth remembering – only exists on paper.
