For a wild pig, life is not easy on the Nebrodi, the suggestive and lush mountain range that surrounds the Messina area, making it an unmissable jewel for hikers and walkers. The containment of the widespread species has become the subject of an “urgent communication”, for the purposes of a sudden “culling operation” triggered by the wildlife, hunting and environmental division of Messina.

The note from the official of the territorial office of the Region reached the mayor of Longi at 10.34 on 1 June, warning that the intervention would take place the following day, for the 2 June holiday. «Dear mayor – the ‘urgent communication’ begins – I hereby inform you that as assistants authorized by the Messina wildlife division, we will carry out a wildlife control intervention. The operation involves the killing of some wild pigs and will take place on 2 June. The area affected by the intervention is located in the territory of the Nebrodi Park, specifically near the houses of Mangalaviti”.

Except that the place indicated is one of the favorite destinations for mountain lovers, tourists and families, especially on a holiday like June 2nd. “Such a rush and communication with such tight deadlines is inexplicable,” the mayor of Longi, Calogero Lazzara, tells AGI. He adds: «What if I hadn’t read this note promptly? These mountains are very popular, especially that area is a regular destination. I stopped everything and asked for explanations. Things like this must be agreed, allowing the necessary time to warn everyone and allow them to take place safely, certainly not during holiday periods.” Furthermore, in recent days, the mayor reminds us, a “well-publicised and therefore well-known” event is taking place right there with sector experts, mountain entertainers and journalists. “We prevented an incredible dangerous situation.”
