The Municipality of Messina conquers an important milestone in promoting sustainable mobility, winning the national call “Bike in common” promoted by Sport and health. The winning project, entitled “Maremontinbike”will bring to the city a loan of 113,000 eurosintended for interventions to encourage the use of the bicycle and enhance the Messina area.
The action plan develops on three main lines: infrastructure, safety and active participation. Among the key interventions stand out the installation of a mountain bike and pedal -assisted bike station at Colli Sarrizzo – four roads, strategic point for intermodality, and the safety of a stretch of cycle path between the urban center and Torre Faro, with the installation of a protective barrier. An innovative element of the project is the introduction of the Gamification: a competition with prizes and bonuses to stimulate the daily use of the bike, promoting a cultural and sustainable change among citizens.
There will be events dedicated to sports, health and slow tourism: from activities in schools to cycling competitions, to the rediscovery of historical routes between sea, mountains and fortifications Umbertine. The role of local associations such as MTB passion, the wolves of the Peloritani and Fiab Messina cycle path is fundamentalpartner of the Municipality for the realization of the initiatives.
“We are proud of this result that allows us to invest in safety, health and quality of life,” said Mayor Federico Basile. “Messina has all the credentials to become a point of reference in the cycling mobility of Southern Italy.”
